Cost of the work depends on different factors such as the complexity of the commission, the technique used, the intended use of the illustration (e.g., commercial vs non-commercial), etc. It is best to discuss what you need so that I can provide you with an accurate quotation.
The sooner the better. I normally have several commissions on the pipeline, so it is best to plan things ahead so that we can meet your deadline on time.
Yes. The scientific illustrator works closely with the client. Communication between the two parties is essential to achieve an accurate and rigorous illustration. And the more fluid and efficient this communication is, the faster I will deliver my work.
The process that we will follow is very simple, and can be summarised in the following steps:
- We will discuss what you need and the best way to illustrate your work either by phone, Google Meets or Zoom.
- I will elaborate a contract and a budget (no expenses or commitment).
- After accepting the budget, and paying a percentage of it (normally around 30%), I will start working on a first draft. Then you can make the appropriate comments and suggest the necessary changes. Next, you will receive an updated draft that will pass a new supervision from you (this process can go through several rounds) before proceeding to the preparation of the final illustration or figure.
- Final payment normally by bank transfer or PayPal.
The contract that we will sign will reflect the intended use of the commission and therefore the rights I am giving you. This will also affect the cost. For an illustration used with commercial purposes, you will have to pay more, either upfront or as royalties. We will have to agree on this. For more info about author's rights, you can read the Libro Blanco de la Ilustración Gráfica en España.
